The first fly of the 190 was in 1939, but the new covered engine gave some problems. A new, more conventional engine mounted in 1940 gave the 190 more balanced performances.

The first exemplars of these fighters were given to Luftwaffe in 1941, and they were greatly appreciated because of superb performances and heavy weaponry. In September the 190 appeared on the English Channel.

The eastern front employed many of the forces of the Luftwaffe. From 1943 the 190s entered in great number in the fliying corps. This FW-190 was dotated of a powerful 30mm cannon to attack tanks and ground targets.

From 1943 on eastern front the 190s substituted the Ju 87 "Stuka" in ground attacks. The FW 190 F was a particular model capable to transport a 1000 kg bomb.

The FW 190 was small but powerful : it can be noticed the small and essential fusuelage ,dominated by the big BMW engine

To improve the chance of destroying  the big and well-armed american bombers, in addition to its powerful guns the FW 190 , as the BF 109, could easily be dotated with this WFr. Gr. (Werfer-Granate) 21 , that was a 21 cm mortar capable of firing high-explosive rocked-propelled shells.

One of the most interesting weapon of the FW190 was the SG 113A "Fostersonde". It was a couple of 77mm antitank-recoiless guns installed vertically in the wings of the plane. When it was passing above a column of enemy tanks , these weapons were activated by the electromagnetic field generated by a tank and began to shot downward, penetrating easily the little armor on the superior part of the tanks. This weapon was employed particularly on the eastern front.

Oberst "Pips" Priller leaded  the JG 26, one of the few FW 190 fighter groups that Luftwaffe could deploy to counter the allied forces during the "Overlord".

Eqipped wit the new on-line Junkers Jumo engine, the FW 190 D-9 mantained all the good performances of the previous versions, but it was faster and in good hands could easily outstand the P-51 "Mustang". It was nicknamed "Long Nose" to the new profile made by the new engine.

ta152.jpg (29937 byte)Ta - 152

Designed Ta-152 in honour of his designer Kurt Tank, the last version of the FW-190 was built in medim-high quote version and it was able to overrun any other piston- engine plane of its time.

SOME QUOTES ON THIS PLANE:

" I only flew the late model of the FW 190, what we called the "long-nose", for about a month , in February 1945. It was a marvelous aircraft, I must say, but if you had over 1000 missions on a 109, you didn t like the 190 too much. There were a lot of German pilots who flew the 190 from the very beginning who very much favored it over the 109, but personally I didn t like it too much. In 1944, the 190s normally attacked the American bombers, and were much better at it than the 109s because they had a radial engine that was very good protection against the rear gunners of the bombers."

Luftwaffe General Walter Krupinski

" In my opinion, the Focke-Wulf and the Thunderbolt were equal in terms of maneuverability and speed"

U.S. Army Air Force Captain James Finnegan
