Jet Fighter prototype |
The first italian jet plane flew on 28th August 1940, and for some time this date was considered very important in the aviation world, becuase that was considered the first jet flight in the world (In reality the first had been the He.178, that flew secretly on 27th August 1939). Even more , the italian project followed a technical solution that was never further developed , because it obtained a jet thrust without affording the complicate studies of in other countries. However , even if this success was isolated and unique, italians managed to surpass british studies about that (thier first jet flight happened on 15th May 1941 , with the Gloster E.28/39 prototype). Secondo Campini , the engineer that designed CC.2, was realizing the prototype in the second half of 30s , but the real problem was the building a turbine engine capable of giving the needed thrust. So he decided for another solution : in his thrust compound , the turbine s function in a normal turbo-reactor engine was accomplied by a normal piston engine. The apparate had three parts : the anterior compressor (capable of 18.000 RPM), the piston engine (12V Isotta Fraschini 900CV) that moved the compressor, the dynamic duct with anular burner, where the air flux from compressor was accelerated before the arrival in combustion chambers. The resulting thrust was of 750 Kg/s. The Monoreattore (as Campini called the engine compound) , was installed on a special (entirely metallic) fuselage built for this purpose , with low-wing profile and retractile landing gear. The cockpit was for 2 people. |
