Carrier-based fighter (A5M4) |
The Imperial Japanese Navy emitted in 1934 a specify about the realization of an embarked fighter with a maximum velocity of 350 Km/h. Even if at the first time this speed was considerated unreachable, the Mitsubishi developed a prototype denominated Ka-14 that seemed to fullfil the requested performances. In the firist tests the veichle reached even 450 Km/h but then aereodinamics problems forced the factory to the heavy modification of the wing profile. The second prototype was so accepted for the series production as A5M1 ( Type96 Mod.1). Then followed other versions that fought in the Chinese war. At the beginning of the war some A5M4 were in service but they resulted soon surpassed and were relegated to training roles. The Allies codenamed it Claude |
