Heavy bomber (Do 217E-2) |
The Do 217, that from 1941 was the standard night heavy bomber of the Luftwaffe, was a derivated from the well tested Do 17 series. Even if it has flew for the first time in August 1938, the Do 217E bomber began active duty only in March 1941, equipping the II/KG 40 for anti naval purposes ot the Atlantic. At the beginnig of 1942 the KG 2 in Holland was ready to begin the bombing runs on England; in fact during the spring 1942 the Do 217E had an important role in the Baedecker attacks (where the targets were chosen because of thier cultural and turistic importance). The other bombing versions were the Do 217K, with a redesigned nose, more defence weaponry and a more long wing, and the more powerful Do 217M; all the two versions could easily be equipped with special warfare bombs. |
