Carrier-based fighter-bomber (F7F-3) |
In 1941 commenced the studies for a new embarked fighter-bomber for the Midway class carriers, and the order on the prototypes was emitted on 30 June of the same year. For the plane, that had to be of excellent performances, Grumman choosed a traditional configuration with a particular aerodynamically sight. The two engines were placed in the wing, that was in a middle position; it had a tricycle-retractile landing gear ( it was the first time that this device was proposed for an embarked plane). Enven before the completition of the testings, the factory had recieved an order of production of 500 planes for the Marines, but the ending of the war arrived before the delivering of these planes. The Tigercat was utilized in a hundred of exemplars after April 1944 (F7F-2/3/4N) also as a double seated fighter. Its career was finished in the early of ´50s |
