The Henschel Hs 129 was the only plane with the modern Fairchild A-10 Warthog to be designed specifly to attack and destroy tanks. In reality, the specify of 1937 required, due to experiences made in the Spanish war, an attack bimotor with heavy weaponry and armor. The prototypes gave inacceptable results, as the cockpit was too small and the engines powerless. Anyway the developing continued because it was a cheap plan, and with the B version had new advantages due to the installation of Gnome-Rhone engines.. The peincipal weapon system was improved with the adding of heavy guns in ventral pods. So from the first 30mm cannon they passed to the 37mm, until utilizing - on the B-3/Wa model- the AT PAL-40L 75mm gun. With this weapon the plane was very difficult to control but all the types of russian tanks could be destroyed with a single shot on target. The limited production (879 exemplars in total) was stopped in autumn 1944 to privilege other programs. |
