Macchi MC202 Folgore

| Plane type & model | Monoplane fighter (MC 202) | Pheraphs the most famous italian fighter of the WWII, the Macchi 202 Folgore (Thunderbolt), first flew when the war was already started (10th August 1940), and remarked the passage from radial-engine fighters to inline-engine fighters in Italy. It had his batism of fire in Libia, November 1941. It was also employed in Russia, but mainly on the Mediterranean skies, to protect italian airspaces. The production was hampered by the lack of engines, and was built by Macchi, Breda and SAI Ambrosini. Some planes were modified as recons, and were used over Malta. The last model had 2 more 7.7mm mg on the wings. It flew until the end of the war, either in the Co-belligerant aviation and in the R.S.I. aviation. |
