Monoplane fighter-bomber (ME-410A-1) |
Because of the enthusiastic new concept of the heavy fighter, at the end of the 30s it was demanded to Messerschmitt to develop the successor of the Bf-110. The studies originated a monoplane figter with a reprojected cockpit and two DB-603 engines; the absolutely new thing was in the two electrical rear-firing turrets mounted on the side of the fusuelage. From the first flying testings the new Me.210 resulted to be an instable and poorly manouverable machine, with the tendency to stall and spin. The series production commenced anyway but it was suspended in 1942 after 200 exemplars in favor of the old Bf-110. The plane was reviewed, dotated with automatic slats on the border of the wings and with new powerful engines. Designated Me.410 Hornisse , the new model entered service in January 1943. Marginally superior to Bf.110 , the Me.410 was utilized as a fighter-bomber and night-interceptor, and was built on license also in Hungary. |
