Heavy Bomber (P.108B) |
Unique strategic bomber built in Italy during the WW2, the Piaggio P.108 was derivated from the P.50. At the end of the experimental activity, the first exemplars of P.108 (bomber) entered service from the July 1941 with the 274° Squadriglia, then denominated Squadriglia Mussolini , to the memory of the dictator s son that had been killed with one of these planes during the re-equipping phase, on 7 August 1941. It was this accident that contribuited to slow up the production, aldready difficult for the italian industry. The first war action was made on 9 June 1942, and only 24 exemplars were completed by Piaggio. In 1942 it was realized another transport version that was minimally produced (12 exemplars ) , the P-108T, utilized also by the Luftwaffe after the surrender of 8 September 1943. One exemplar (MM.24318) was fitted with a 102/40 cannon in the nose , but only made a demonstration fly. |
